Lua is a powerful and fast programming language that is easy to learn and use and to embed into your application. Lua is designed to be a lightweight embeddable scripting language. It is used for all sorts of applications, from games to web applications and image processing. Learning to script in Roblox is an ongoing process that you get better at as time goes on. And don’t go comparing yourself to others. Like I said, I might be good at UI work, but if you compare me to the developers of Jailbreak when it comes to building a car, mine will just be a brick with 4 wheels and the default script that comes with a.

But, like me, you may need convincing. I hadn’t heard of Lua at all when I started looking at easy-to-learn programming languages. Initially, I focused on Python, Ruby and Javascript. Ruby seemed promising because there’s a notable effort to get kids interested in it (e.g. KidsRuby). And Javascript, well, there are a lot of places that teach Javascript as an intro language, including Codecademy.

But an interesting thing kept popping up as I began reading about the surge of young programmers launching successful iOS apps — almost all of them used a software development kit called Corona SDK. And the language used within Corona to build the apps is Lua.

Lua is a lightweight but powerful scripting language (meaning that it’s not compiled like C or Java) that also has the great benefit of being easy to learn. While it’s not the most popular programming language in the world, Lua is widely used in gaming and its use is growing quickly.

So I installed Corona SDK for myself and began playing around. It wasn’t long before I came to see this framework as the easiest and quickest way for children to learn how to program. And by program, I’m talking about real apps that are popular on the Apple iOS and Android app stores.

So, Lua is a proven entry language for kids, and Corona SDK provides a cost-free, easy way to make use of Lua to build real apps for almost any platform. And that, for me, was the critical piece. It’s not enough for the language itself to be easy to learn. There has to be a simple way to take that code and make it something real. That kind of clear incentive is hard to beat for kids (or anyone else, for that matter).

About Lua for Kids

My name is CD. I’m the father of two iPad-obsessed kids in Southern California who are keen on learning how to make their own apps. After spending an embarrassing amount of time online searching for programming resources, I decided to cobble together an approach that I think will work best for my kids. It’s not meant to be innovative, just simple and effective. In particular, I’m interested in ideas that are suitable for children under ten-years old.
